Top 10 Rules for Working with Congress

1 Know Your Goal.
Every visit, call, or letter should have a purpose, even if the purpose is as general as asking your
representative to support scientific research or to simply establish a relationship with a member of
Congress or a staffer. You may wish to ask for additional funding for a specific program or discipline,
or offer your expertise in an area of science that ties into one or more of the large concerns facing
Congress at any given time — for example, national security, health care, or the state of the economy.
Determine what you hope to accomplish and plan accordingly.
